Preconference Sessions

Fall ESOP Forum

Salt Lake City :: September 17–18, 2019 (preconference on September 16)

Preconference session

Preconference sessions use expert presentations and interactive small groups to give attendees an intensive, hands-on introduction to a specific employee ownership topic. Spend a focused half-day getting up to speed on ESOP sustainability or on communications and culture. See below for details on each session. The preconference is an optional extra-cost addition to your Forum registration. Because the sessions are held simultaneously, any given person can only register for one preconference session.

Preconference: Monday, September 16
Essentials for a Sustainable ESOP

ESOP companies have both challenges and opportunities that are unique to them. How do you balance the need for growth with the need to provide for repurchase? Does your compensation system reward short-term or long-term thinking? How long should an ESOP loan be? What role should the board play?

Research and experience provide a set of best practices that can help make sustainability a reality, and this preconference session will cover plan design options, repurchase obligation and distribution policies, governance for the long-term, maintaining an ownership culture, and strategic planning.

A Crash Course for ESOP Communications: Jumpstart Your Communications and Culture

Sponsored by Emplify

The research is clear that ESOP companies outperform their peers, but to capture the power of employee ownership, your company needs a plan for communicating what employee ownership means and maintaining an engaged culture where people think and act like owners. This session will draw on the experience of experts in the field and company insiders sharing their tips about what works.

Participants will leave with an action-oriented framework for ownership culture and communications, examples of actual tools used by ESOP companies, and ideas for starting up (or revitalizing) a communications committee. This session will also cover stock valuation, one of the most commonly overlooked areas of ESOP education and an essential concept if people are going to understand the connection between what they do and the value they create.
